Dainese: life-saving Innovation
The first motorcycle airbag that protects bikers by means of digital technology
Technology and Made in Italy merge to protect people’s safety and life through an active and innovative protection. A wireless dual-system airbag, both on the bike and inside the jacket, that exchanges data and manages to save lives.
The collaboration with Cefriel helped Dainese move from a sartorial research center on fabrics and clothing prototypes to a digital technology structure with engineers and experts of automatic controls, radically changing its own business model, too.

Need
Produce the first motorbike airbag system for the road use embedded in the jacket and without any connection with the motorbike, combining the safety aspects with the comfort and aesthetic requirements of clothing.
Prevent at most consequences and risks in case of unnecessary airbag activation.
Guarantee considerably inferior airbag activation times with respect to alternative solutions.
Solution
Dainese D-air® integrates sensors on the fork and under the saddle of the motorcycle with electronic components on the vehicle and in the jacket. Thanks to its intelligent algorithm, Dainese D-air® activates in the event of different hazardous situations.
It has an activation time of 40msec, 50% lower than systems activated through a cable connected to the motorcycle.
D-air® is refillable and reusable. Innovative materials combine aesthetics, comfort, and effectiveness.
Impact
-72 % force transmitted
During the impact, Dainese airbag has a - 72 % force transmitted if compared with a certified back protector Liv. 2 (-89% compared to a Level 1).
0 false positives
No unnecessary activation since the launch of the product with respect to more than 1,000 incidents in which the D-air® activated correctly.
Partnership development
The project has led to the development of new relationships with motorcycle manufacturers. For instance, Ducati Multistrada D-air® is the first factory-made motorcycle equipped with an embedded airbag system.
Increased company’s business value
The D-air® project significantly contributed to Dainese evaluation by an Investment Fund that entered its capital.
