Safer maintenance through mixed reality

How to minimize risks for workers by leveraging augmented reality through mixed reality

In plant maintenance, one of the most important factors is to minimize risks for workers. In this project, the company wanted to experiment, through Augmented Reality, a new way to support its employees, by facilitating their tasks and providing them with an effective tool to have real-time access to all the information they need.

By examining the company’s needs and identifying the best fitting digital technologies to meet them, Cefriel developed a system that is able to support workers’ activities on the field during power plants maintenance.

SCENARIO

Need

Support workers’ activities on the field during power plants maintenance.

Innovate maintenance process, by providing workers with all the information they need for safe and effective services.

Simplify maintenance workers in getting information on the assets to work on, by facilitating access to guided procedures and fast learning.

Facilitate maintenance workers collaboration through remote maintenance, too.

Solution

Cefriel supported its client in the development of a system that, by means of mixed reality and wearable devices, enables maintenance workers to access information on the asset to be maintained, start guided procedures and fast learning, detect dangerous situations, and to remote cooperate during workers’ activities on the field.

By wearing HoloLens, maintenance workers can be authenticated by framing the badge, and get real-time assistance to safely and precisely perform maintenance operations, also thanks to search and display of documentation via voice chatbot, together with online collaboration tools for remote assistance.

RESULTS

Impact

Risks reduction for workers

Thanks to augmented reality, it is possible to minimize risky situations for plants maintenance workers.

Reduced maintenance errors

Providing workers with contextual, prompt, and direct instructions reduce the margin of error in maintenance operations.

Maintenance costs reduction

By adopting augmented reality, maintenance errors can be reduced, thus reducing overall costs, too.
